Innovative Concepts and Solutions

A clothesline is a basic necessity for most homes in Jamaica. It typically consists of any type of rope, cord, or twine that has been stretched between two points (e.g. two sticks, post, trees or poles, wall), outside or indoors, and above the level of the ground. The clothesline allows for clothing that has recently been washed to be hanged along the line to dry, using clothes pegs or clothespins. In Jamaica, and by extension the Caribbean, the lines are frequently located in backyards, or on balconies. Following modernization, most of today’s clotheslines are typically suspended or supported by steel posts, wood, and less commonly trees or walls.
